Featured ArtistSusan Day
This month's featured artist is Susan Day of Susan Day Ceramics.
Susan produces an array of contemporary porcelain ceramics and lighting. Her work explores the properties of porcelain, and among these properties there are two distinct strands which can stand alone: translucency and colour.
Translucency: Susan makes her own clay stamps from found objects and uses them to texture thin sheets of porcelain which she then makes into tea-light holders and table lamps.
The designs are abstract but inspired by various elements of nature, such as frost and rain, flowers and leaves.
Colour: Susan makes collages in porcelain from her own palette of coloured porcelain clays. Layers of different colours are cut, torn and joined, and from them an 'image' is formed.
Susan's current inspiration is the landscape. The 'images' that she creates are each used to construct a pair of vessels by laminating the coloured porcelain collages onto sheets of white porcelain.
